Deer Hunting Shotguns and Muzzleloaders in New Jersey
New Jersey is a shotgun state for deer. Centerfire and rimfire rifles are not legal for deer hunting anywhere in the state, so hunters use slug guns, buckshot, muzzleloaders and bows. This guide covers what the 2026-27 NJ Fish and Wildlife Hunting and Trapping Digest allows. Always check the current digest and your Deer Management Zone before the season.
How New Jersey deer seasons work
The state is split into numbered Deer Management Zones, or DMZs. Each zone is assigned to one of four regulation sets, called Safety, Low, Medium and High, and that set decides how many seasons and permits the zone gets. Recent changes cut the number of regulation sets from nine to four, raised the annual antlered limit to seven, and require every harvested deer to be reported by 10 p.m. on the day of harvest. Deer permits for 2026-27 went on sale at 10 a.m. on September 14, 2026.
The main firearm seasons are:
- Six-Day Firearm season: December 7-12, 2026, statewide in most zones. Shotgun or muzzleloader.
- Permit Shotgun season: dates and zones set in the digest, with zone permits.
- Permit Muzzleloader season: dates and zones set in the digest, with zone permits.
Zones 45 and 46 are open only for fall bow, youth days, the Six-Day Firearm season and winter bow. Check the zone map for your exact spot.
Legal shotguns for deer
The digest sets these limits:
- Gauge no smaller than 20 and no larger than 10.
- The gun may hold no more than three shells.
- Slugs must be lead, lead alloy or copper, rifled or sabot.
- Buckshot must be between #4 (0.24 inch) and #000 (0.36 inch).
That rules out .410 and 28 gauge for deer. It also means a pump or semi-auto with an extended tube must be plugged to three shells.
Slug barrel or smoothbore
A rifled slug barrel with sabot slugs is the most accurate setup and is the common choice where shots can reach 100 yards, such as Hunterdon and Salem farm fields. Many 12 and 20 gauge pumps and semi-autos take an interchangeable rifled barrel, often with a cantilever scope mount. A smoothbore barrel with rifled (Foster) slugs is cheaper and fine for shots inside 60 to 75 yards in the Pine Barrens and North Jersey hardwoods. Buckshot works at short range in thick cover, but pattern your gun first.
Optics
A low-power scope in the 1-4x or 2-7x range suits most New Jersey deer ground. A red dot works well in thick pines and swamps. Mount the optic, then zero it with the exact slug you will hunt with. Sabot slugs vary a lot in accuracy from one barrel to the next.
Muzzleloaders
For permit muzzleloader seasons and the Six-Day Firearm season, a muzzleloading rifle must be .44 caliber or larger, and a smoothbore muzzleloader must be 10 to 20 gauge. Only black powder or black powder substitutes are allowed. A modern inline .50 caliber rifle with a sabot bullet is the popular choice. Check the digest for current rules on scopes and ignition.
What is not legal
- Centerfire rifles of any caliber for deer.
- Rimfire rifles for deer.
- Handguns for deer.
- Shotguns holding more than three shells.
You can still use a centerfire rifle for practice at the Fish & Wildlife ranges that allow it, which are Clinton, Colliers Mills, Flatbrook, Millville and Stafford Forge, up to .30 caliber. At least one person in your party needs a New Jersey hunting license for the gear in use, and handguns are not allowed on these ranges.
Licenses, permits and blaze orange
You need a New Jersey firearm hunting license, which requires hunter education, plus the season and zone permits your hunt calls for. Bowhunters must also wear orange during the Six-Day Firearm season, and ground blinds need 200 square inches of orange visible from all sides.
Black bear
New Jersey held a black bear season in 2026 in Bear Management Zones 1-5 in the north. Segment A runs October 12-17, 2026, archery all week with muzzleloader on the last three days. Segment B runs December 7-12, 2026, with shotgun or muzzleloader, the same days as the Six-Day deer season. You need a bear permit for your zone, the bag is one bear over 75 pounds per segment, and the season can close early if the harvest target is reached. Bear hunting has been on and off in recent years, so confirm the status each year.
Where to hunt
New Jersey has more than 120 Wildlife Management Areas plus state forests. Popular deer ground includes Clinton WMA in Hunterdon County, Flatbrook and Whittingham in Sussex, Pequest in Warren, Colliers Mills and Greenwood Forest in Ocean, Wharton State Forest in Burlington, and Millville and Union Lake in Cumberland. Transporting your shotgun
Carry hunting guns unloaded and cased or locked in the trunk, and drive directly between home and the hunting area, with only reasonable stops. More detail is in the New Jersey gun laws overview.

Most pump and semi-auto shotguns are legal in New Jersey. Some tactical shotguns with folding stocks, pistol grips or detachable magazines may meet the state assault firearm definition, so confirm with your New Jersey dealer that the model is New Jersey legal before ordering.
